Project Update #14: Official TR response

Tek Recon give a response to the Bay Area Nerf review and the street release date break by KMart

It should be noted that Tek Recon believe the unit to be a lemon (as said by a number of fans) and the unit is being replaced stat. Kudos Tek Recon, a lot of companies would have ignored this or let it blow up and deal with a mess down the road. You have shown your weight in gold and fans will not forget this!

So what went down? Bay Area Nerfs Josh recently came across the Hammer Head blaster at his local KMart. This is pretty insane to hear, after fans were promised to get their blasters before any retail customer. They threw up their review under the post Tek Recon: Flea Market Special.

I contacted Tek Recon to find out what was going on with fans Kickstarter after reading the review by Josh - they promptly gave me the response that KMart had broken the street release date and they were looking in to the issue as a matter of urgency. Listening to the fan feedback sites, they promptly released this press release update:
"TRibe we are listening and we hear the disappointment of many of you loud and clear. It has always been our intention and plan to make sure that our kickstarter backers receive product ahead of retail availability. The development took longer than expected and were faced with the difficult decision to either ship some retail inventory first or lose the retail placement for the year based on contractual obligations. Ultimately the Tek Recon project could not succeed without being at retailers. We regret that this did not allow us to get your shipments out first and we are truly sorry. To all of our backers we appreciate your patience and support while we get out of the starting gate. The main focus of our Kickstarter campaign was designed to help fund the building of a robust APP and thanks to you we have delivered. The good news is that product will begin to ship early next week and as a good will gesture to our backers, each blaster will have an extra supply of NRG Rounds. We are committed to continuous improvement and value your feedback; we are listening and want the Tek Recon experience to be nothing short of awesome. Please contact us at tekreconcommand@gmail.com to make yourself heard."

They went on their Facebook page to address fans there too, one thing you can't say is that this company does not shy or hide away from any potential issue that could blow up needlessly:

As supporter of the campaign, it was hard to see the upset of fans, and I'm glad that Tek Recon came forward with a reason (they didn't need to) as to what was going on, and how they would fix this. I'm left feeling happy with how this went down, and how well they showed themselves to fans. Those who didn't support the campaign are now picking up the blasters because they see the openness and ownership and genuine upset by Tek Recon over the whole debacle. Super props to the Tek Recon team and leadership for acting so quickly on this. After this I know we fans are in good hands.

Let us know how you think Tek Recon have handled this whole situation!

    1. Same here, but they have pulled thru and shown that they really care. It takes a lot for a company to admit error, but I think fans are back on their side after this. Glad they took the steps needed.

    2. takes some big balls to admit the fault and some of the ownership of blame. they did alright in my book, a converted fan who did not back them. this kind of customer service is not to be looked twice at. great stuff

    1. It's cool, everyone who signed up got the update, I contacted them last night when Josh posted the article. It's all good now they've levelled with fans. It's a bit intrusive for us to ask all this, but I think fans appreciate the way it's been handled.

    2. Fans do not have the right to ask this kind of stuff, just my opinion.

I didn't back them, but after how they handled this, why not. Hopefully a local Target has them

  3. I think Bay area jumped WAY to fast. To get a product that quickly and just bash it to pieces not even thinking to contact Tek about the bad ranges, is bad on there part. With a new product (Heck its completely new toy not just a new model), its going to have problems to begin with! The first version of any thing is all ways going to have its issues.

I just thought it seemed like a bashjam on something they didn't even attempt to work out. They really hurt a company's rep before it even has a chance to fully release any thing.

They have done some pretty harsh damage without realising it. I'm not happy they did this to TR

    2. Nerf2Me2 - big fan here! Glad to see you part of this community! :D I do not think it was justified to attack Tek Recon in this manner. It has done them a bad press they did not need. They could have just contacted the Consumer Support to resolve it. Yeah I am angry too with them for the muddrag

    3. I think with all the hype, there is some expected let-down. All in all, he gave his findings on the blaster he had in his hands. If it had been terrible, it would have been more worrying if he gave it a brilliant review.

Honesty is king - and hey, would we have found out the reason stores got this stuff before Kickstarter supporters? Or the extra NRG rounds?

A lot can be said about Tek Recon, but you can't take away the fact their Customer Service has been awesome and that response time is something to be praised. A lot of companies can learn a lot from this incident.

  6. i am personally glad to see that Tek recon is coming out in front of the backers and trying to make things right. their response time is nothing if not superb [ Compared to say..nerf and every release this year]. At this point I am still hopeful and await my own blasters. As a community the best we can do is try to offer as many objective, fact-based reviews as we can once the product is sent to us. If it still fails then, we will call it out. If it performs like I think it will, we will praise it. The ball is in Tek's court at this point.

Fans should not feel forced to give a good review because they feel they have to. We need to keep it honest, fact-based and as insightful as we can. It will only make for better future products. Good call Michael

    2. Well Michael MLD knows how it works he played with the testers. His report was positive so we know we can expect good products.

The community needs to stick together because damn right we can make companies give us what we would like to see in blasters. I hope Tek Recon stick around for a long time I will certainly keep buying this stuff

    1. I agree with you, it's something we haven't seen before (to my mind?). Nerf did some obnoxious lackadaisical apology over the Pocket scene.

They didn't need to do this, but it's great they did step up.

    2. yeah they did not need to do this so hats off to them for it. fans wwill not forget the gesture and the openess

    3. Good call on this, I figured it was a lemon. Bad how Nerfcast guys jumped the gun, and K-Mart for breaking the date. I think Tek Recon have done a good job, and I'm real glad I backed this. Will stay a loyal fan after seeing how they responded to it all.

Looking forward to my Havok Kickstarter sets!!

    4. Hey CasOMDoOm thanks for stopping by man! I want to make clear that the Bay Area Nerf guys only reviewed the blaster they had in their hands.

It was a lemon blaster, so it got a lemon review. I'm expecting my blasters this time tomorrow from Tek Recon, so I will give a review of my findings then. I'm confident after playing with the testers that we will see decent reviews put out. The only issue that can arise is that people won't want to keep buying the ammo. But hey, they last waaaay longer than the average Elite Nerf dart, con is that battling outside you are likely to lose them. But they come in neo orange man so not a problem unless you are playing on Mars

  13. Bravo Tek Recon! A fan for life after tracking this with much anticipation. I did not expect such a quick response I have to say, so forgive me but after much bad experience in Kickstarters you have changed my perceptions.

I look forward to supporting you forward from this time, I will be a fan for life for sure.

Regards to the team and fellow fans

    1. Petr hi and thanks for the comment. I think fans have seen bloggers pushing Kickstarters only to be burnt (Paper Shooters). I took my time and found out everything I could before committing myself. I think I did a good job helping fans out with info to make their own decisions on it all. Good to have you part of the TRibe man!

  14. Some street break - nothing in TN at all!

It is a good job that we got an upfront and honest answer. I do not think we have ever seen the response time or even this degree of honesty ever.

I admit I did not back the campaign because I had reservations. After this goodwill and transparency how can you not back them? Keeping a watch eye out on shelves and will be picking up a couple for sure.

This had the potential to blow up badly. It shows how much they care about the fans and yeah we appreciate it. As a new Tek Recon follower I can say I appreciate the effort and you have me as a new fan.

Keep up the great work and keep being brilliant.

Nerf can learn a lot here.

    1. Lol Phillip - where abouts are you? Maybe I can help get some info for you. We know that Target, KMart and Walmart have them on sale right now, so try those stores around you.

I think there is a lot of positive to be taken out of this, and yeah, fans appreciate the response and how quick it was handled. I see a good future for these folks, and that means better blasters for us fans!

I am going to be honest right here I did not back the Kickstarter because I thought it would not take off. I feel pretty bad I got to say because after seeing how fans have reacted and come out in support for Tek Recon it makes me want to be part of that community if you get me.

I just went out to my local K-Mart and picked up 2 Hammerheads and to my measurements being correct it easily hits the ranges (some shots were even way OVER the 75 feet anyone else seen this too?)

It does look to me that the Bay Area guy got a bad product off the factory but it happens.

I feel I am buying with confidence after seeing that I am in good hands if anything ever goes wrong.

Thanks for the update Tek Recon you boys got a new fan.

    1. Hey Brad good to see you part of the TRibe man! I don't think you should be feeling bad at all, your money, your call. Said it a few times, but this could have gone bad as you say, but they turned it around. That shows a lot on their side that they're serious and take fan loyalty serious.

They are really unique in how they engage fans and keep them updated. I think they have a good future if they keep it up - hey it made you turn in to a fan!

The range thing, yep the blasters can do that with the calibration switch. Check out their video here:

  16. Well I was extremely excited to pick one up from K-Mart and my only issue is that the ammo doesn't fire every time I try. I think the spring in the clip isn't tight enough because when I take the clip out I can see that the rounds aren't at the top.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I absolutely hope it was a lemon...

  18. Hi MLD just to let you know I picked up 2 HammerHeads in New York Target and experienced no issues here with the firing. The blaster is getting 50-60 feet normally with some at 73/74. I haven't seen one hit 75 yet but I love how it feels and fires.

Good call on Tek Recon consumer support we need to see that more
